I've seen cleaning my hallway, the area from the kitchen to the living room and other high traffic areas every week for the last month. I don't see any ill effects. Do you think if I clean high traffic areas often (not professionally), it might be too much?

Cleaning, you mean Wet clean? I've been told to NEVER wet clean, that it breaks down the glue and causes the carpet to wear quickly. If you just mean vacuum, I've been told you can't do that often enough with several different carpet installers claiming that daily vacuuming is beneficial and they do it themselves in their own home.

I haven't lived in any home long enough where I saw any evidence one way or another. Do whatever you want to do, it's almost certainly not going to make any sort of major difference.

Dry cleaning good, wet cleaning bad.

Other than dry vacuuming often, Best thing to do is professionally steam clean the carpets every 1-2 years. By professional I mean a commercial, van/truck mounted steam cleaning machine and a company with a good reputation.

It depends on how you live. You wear your shoes in the house (dirt), go barefoot(oils) your dogs won't wear their slippers?
As soon as you see wear patterns, your carpet is dirty.
If all the above is true, your carpet may benefit by about every 6 months.
A home cleaner is good enough for that but wait too long and the dirt is deep in the pile and a stronger pro job is probably needed.
This is assuming a pile type . Flat carpets can take a lot more abuse that frequent vacuuming can handle.

Is it bad to professionally steam clean carpets every 6 months instead of the recommended 12-18 months? We have a family of asthma sufferers and decreasing dust and dirt in the house is key. We actually use our medications way less when the dust is decreased in any environment.

I know dirt gets embedded in carpet fibers and damages fibers. So steam cleaning should be better right? And shouldn't damage carpet fibers if I do it twice a year? This is getting it done from a very reputable local company.

We have dogs who sometimes make messes. I steam clean the carpet way more often than twice a year. How the carpet holds up depends on the quality of the carpet, and what we have still looks very good. I do it myself with a Hoover machine. I had Bissell before but the plastic parts in them broke and they did not last long.

Since your family has allergies you might want to plan on switching to hard surface floors at the point when the carpet needs to be replaced. Until then vacuum often with a machine that has good HEPA filtration, have everyone remove shoes when coming indoors, and keep windows closed and run the HVAC if it's dusty outside. Change HVAC filters often, too.
