Good morning, I'm getting ready to replace a raised deck, 7' off the ground, that goes over a walk out basement. Under the existing deck is a cement patio that has been there for 20+ years, no cracks, very well done. The existing deck (12' x 22') is supported by 6x6's that are places outside the cement patio, so no support actually under existing deck. FFX county code would require support post under the deck. My question, would i have to break through the cement patio to dig a footer, or could the existing cement patio service as a footer for the new post, attached with a Bracket secured to the patio?

Thanks..

Under what circumstances?

Plus what other structural members?

What did the architect or county inspector THERE say about the plan?

But if really needed to...
cutting a hole in the patio and setting a footing pier (or two) isn't all that complicated.

"footings" have rebar in them. Not many patio slabs have that, plus it is too thin and not below the frost depth (if required). The slab will not work as a support for the new deck.
