I watched my neighbor get a new roof put on his 1800 sq foot house, and it took them 2 days to do a full tear off and re roof. Roof shingles are about $30 a bundle. So why are they charging people $7000-30,000 for this?

$30,000 for 1800 se ft house and regular asphalt shingles? The roof must be very whimsical, but then, it wouldn't be done in 2 days...
Smells like a rip off.

Several factors affect the average cost of a roof replacement including the materials used, labor costs, and the size and pitch of the roof.

The following are figures for the average cost of roof replacement:
  • Asphalt: $700-$3,700
  • Slate: $17,000-$84,000
  • Wood shingles or shake: $7,000-$20,000
  • Concrete tile: $8,000-$21,000
  • Ceramic clay tile: $12,000-$21,000
  • Metal: $5,000-$22,000 for steel; $12,000-$24,000 for aluminum; $25,000-$40,000 for copper.

$30,000 is at the high end but I have hear it being done. My point is even $7000 is a very high price for 2 days of work.

Labor costs for heavy work high up on a sloping roof in the full heat all day (steep slope vs gradual), liability insurance, auto insurance, workman's comp, different costs of shingles depending on composition, underlayment, waste disposal, advertising, vehicles and fuel, bookkeeping, office utilities and other costs, taxes, profit...

You can't price work on a per hour basis. It's not minimum wage job. How long does it take to cut down a tree? They charge $5000 for it. Each line of work seemingly has a going rate of its own.

Both of us know most roofers are paid cash and there is no insurance, and they pay their sub contractors $100-200 a day.

Only the roofers you hire because you sound cheap. What do you do for a living?

Many factors are included in cost. This article explains it well:

Best way is to get several bids, and check all this:

Some contractors hire unskilled day workers - you don't want them on your roof.

I don't know that at all. You can, I am sure, find some like that as there are disreputable contractors, but there are also reputable ones.

Laborers are on every roofing job. Those bundles of shingles don't get up there by themselves and tearing off the old shingles don't require skill just brawn.
