I had one in my first house (we had it built) and then we moved to our current home (already built). Shortly after we moved in, I think my husband's phrase was "I guess we have to get a central vac or our floors will never get cleaned" -- we didn't own a broom (LOL) and we have hardwoods on the entire first floor. We had it installed the next week (by a professional though). I LOVE my central vacuum but it is not a new one (so I can't speak to the newer features). The hose is longer but not that bad to move around (I am not a big person and I manage fine). Just my experience...

Seems like an expensive way to avoid going to the grocery store and buying a broom.

This was the most recent thread on the topic, but we recently moved to a home with a central vac system - VacuFlo - with the hide-a-house system. While it's pretty cool to see it work, the vacuum itself seems to have far less suction power than the refurbished Dyson I've had since 2003 or 2004. It's especially bad on the carpet - if there is a piece of lint or a loose string or something, I might need to run over it with the vacuum several times to get it picked it.

The only thing I like about it is that the people that installed it prior to us had an outlet in the garage so you can use it inside your car. With the snowy New England winter and sanded/salted roads, the dirt can really stick to your feet in the winter and it's nice to just be able to pull out the house and vacuum out the floors of the car.

I called the local dealer to get a tune-up, thinking that might be the problem and they gave me the suggestion to clean out the filter in the main canister in the garage (nasty task, as it all drops down onto your arms while you're cleaning it). That helped a small amount, but not significantly.

To me, it seems like a lot of work to pull out the house to vacuum one or two rooms, and then retract the house into the wall. Just plugging in the Dyson and vacuuming the one or two rooms is quicker since it has much better suction power.

Anybody else have a similar experience?
