I acquired a piece of furniture and the back of the piece is unfinished. It's heavy and awkward to move so I'd like an easy to use (easy to apply with little mess) and one coat wood stain of some kind. So that the piece can stay on the carpeted floor while the stain is applied.
Any good one coat brands that you have used?

One coat? That's hilarious.

But, to "almost" get there- Minwax Polyshades:

Yes I know.
Not looking to make it look like finished wood, just dark enough to lose the current cosmetic look.

You could also go with one of the Minwax wood finish stains and then apply tung oil finish. That is a toned down look; I don't think it is as glossy as the their Polyshades.

Well, if that's the case try-

Check for the different colors- one may be just what you need; and give protection also.

I bought a cheap table from a Indonesia.
3 years later and 7+ coats of Minwax and finally, it only requires 1 coat per season.
Oh, did I forget to mention the 6 coats of polyurethane?

1 coat. You so funny.

Any fairly dark stain will give you passable coverage in one coat. It may not be very even, depending on what type of wood it is. And it certainly won't look "finished" without a top coat of some kind.

I'm sure you know to put down some plastic under it if you're working over carpet.
