We did a lot of research 12 years ago when we bought the mattress we still sleep on; we bought a 100% foam/latex mattress on a platform bed so no box springs. It was firm so we also bought a 4" thick topper and replace them every few years and when they get that body valley on each side. But the original mattress is still in perfect condition. We were very pleased with this mattress so we bought another foam rubber mattress for our guest room and bought a tempurpedic type topper for it -- oh so very comfy!

I have also done some research since I will be needing to get a mattress shortly. The longevity of a memory foam mattress often depends on the quality of foams it uses. In general the heavier it is the longer it will last.

Here are some of the brands that I am considering:

www.leesa.com
www.loomandleaf.com

We are in the process of buying a new Select Comfort mattress. Our previous pillow top lasted about ten years but should have been replaced sooner, and my dad's Select Comfort is going on 18 years and still awesome. It's a lot to spend on a mattress but I believe it's absolutely worth it. We aren't small people and a nice mattress is worth it.

When we were furnishing our "winter" house, we pretty much got everything from one store-a local place. The mattress wasn't the best but we figured we were only there for 6 weeks so it should be ok.

When we were there in 2015, I was pretty much living on Advil due to back pain. I went down there with the pain so didn't think it was the bed-but I'm sure the bed didn't help. I was VERY depressed and Hubby & I were pretty much at each other's throats.

When we were there in 2016, we were there about 2 or 3 days when I noticed things were going on. I started getting depressed and I started realized that my back was starting to cause me pain. I told hubby that we ARE going to get a foam topper for the bed. Nothing special really-a KMart buy. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The depression immediately went away, my back stop hurting. I didn't realize that the majority of the problems the year before all stemmed from the mattress. It is amazing that a fairly cheap mattress topper can make such a bit difference.

This year when we went down, we decided to sell the house and stay at my SIL's, but I brought my mattress topper to her house.
