Okay - need some advice/help. My GE stainless steel fridge is out of warranty - four years old.

Today, the water dispenser quit dispensing water. About two weeks ago, we noticed that the ice dispenser would not dispense crushed ice. Even with the setting on "crush," it would only dispense cubes. In other words, it dispenses cubes on both settings - "crush" and "cubes."

Now today, the water dispenser has stopped. However, the ice maker is still making ice - which we assume means it is not something to do w/ the water line. We checked the back of the fridge and no water is dripping back there.

So any suggestions? Where to start trying to trouble shoot? I really hate going thru/ the hassle and expense of getting a repair person out here if there is something I can check (or jiggle!!! LOL!!!)

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Do you have a filter? When was it lasted changed?
If that doesn't change anything- it's probably the paddle switch (what you push with a glass) or the solinoid (sp) valve that let's the water run.

Great info! Changed filter about 3 weeks ago. I will look up that valve and have found a replacement for the paddle switch. Paddle switch appeared fine until DH just messed w/ it an hour ago and he managed to break it off.

Do you think I can dismantle the unit and replace that solinoid switch myself -assuming I can find a repair manual online?

I am thinking it may be that valve.

The valve is usually located on the bottom/back of fridge. Find the line that the supply line is hooked to- and follow it as far as you can. You should find the valve somewhere along the way.

Thank you so much! I knew someone would be kind enuff to help me out w/ this! We have done so many other repairs - plumbing - over the years. Seems to me we should be able to figure out how to do this one. I found a website that carries info on appliances and how to order the various parts.

Appreciate your help . . . Kledge!!!

If the dispenser is getting water, it's probably the switch/solenoid/valve unit. It is similar to the workings of the self serve coke/pepsi/ice dispenser at B-K/McD's
