In our area, we have a couple of local appliance shops with repair departments that are much cheaper than Sears, and may actually fix your appliance on the first try.
We've also gone online, ordered parts, looked at manuals, and fixed it ourselves.
I recommend Speedqueen...it's a non-HD machine, top load conventional. Built like a Mack truck. I expect me to die before it does.
Tonight I washed about 10 items, ranging from socks to shirts, and when it started spinning, the damn thing started banging and dancing across the floor again ! I hit the shut off button, and when I was able to open the lid, the clothes were evenly distributed across the bottom of the drum, so it wasn't all loaded to one side.
I'm calling Whirlpool tomorrow to find out what is up.

You mentioned Sears....if you have a Sears Outlet you can often find items that are slightly scratched or dented for great discounts. I got a top of the line Samsung top loader this past summer for $400.
It has only a very slight scratch on the front which I don't even notice due to the way the laundry room is laid out.
If you have a Fry's Electronics near you, you can get awesome deals on appliances. Sign up for their email and get daily and weekly discount promo codes. I bought my current Samsung washer from them and it was on sale at the time (with a one day promo code) for $299. Works great!
We also have an older (10+ years) Maytag washer that was making banging noises on the spin cycle. We got the parts online (springs and snubber ring), watched a you tube video and my husband and I fixed it within an hour.

well I purchased a washer and dryer five years ago off craigslist and only had a problem with the dryer just this year and husband got the parts and fixed it hisself for 80.00 and the dryer is as good as new and I have never had a problem with the washer yet knock wood . I paid a whopping 300 for the set five years ago I think I got my 300 out of them long ago but hey as long as they are still doing the job I wont buy new ones until I need too .
Though I am handy and over the years have repaired washers and dryers myself, they are so cheap that if not a quick and easy fix I just dispose of and buy new.
Find a pre-1990 washing machine on Craigslist with no signs of rust. It will go forever and is simple to repair. I have a 1986 Kenmore at one place that will likely out-live me. With the YouTube HowTo videos, it's pretty easy to repair old appliances that pre-date the expensive-to-replace electronics.
Can you buy commercial washing machines that are more reliable than the home ones? I have a full size 2010 LG stacked below the dryer in a closet at my other house. I don't have space for a top loader. When it dies, I'd like to know what I have for options.
