Recently I had several remodelers come into my house to bid on some kitchen remodeling work. I like to open up the kitchen here, put in new tiles, and new island with the same slab of granite.

I chatted with them and 2 different modelers said similarly that most of the kitchens they worked on are showcase kitchens but the owners doesn't really cook much or know how to. One said that a family with a small but functional kitchen cooks more at home than these grand kitchens that he's done.

Is this somewhat of a true statement?

I am sure there are plenty of homeowners that renovate their kitchens and don't cook in them. I did not fall into that category. In selling real estate, I have never come across a seller that renovated their kitchen and said in hindsight that said to me they wished they had a smaller kitchen. If you entertain even a small amount and don't even cook, everyone seems to congregate in the kitchen. Everyone needs to eat, but not everyone has to or wants to cook.

Beyond the data, does it Matter with 'other' people do?

Me, I have a big kitchen (150sq/ft) and cook at Least 2 meals every day, and 3 meals more than half the time. It's irrelevant if someone else with the same sized kitchen cooks more, less or the same.

These are anecdotes and are fairly common ones at that.
Truth is a higher standard but I'll go along with the basic truths of it.

My (90" x 104") galley kitchen and I fall into the second category.

The grand kitchens I had been catering in for the home owners were definitely utilized. Still in awe of the one patrons kitchen,it has a canning station ,a bakery room and her two refrigerator systems seemed filled with luscious dinners. Maybe they were charitable folks though as the matron did do a lot of work for the community. Loved doing the fund raiser dinners. We had everything there at our disposal.

Some well to do ..do well at investing in the community and their home.

I want a huge kitchen since I love to bake. Counter space and dual ovens take up room.

I'd love to hear what the "canning station" and the "bakery room" each consist of - sounds intriguing!

Sounds like you got a kitchen suitable for a restaurant there.

By definition, people having their kitchen remodeled don't cook in it while it's being remodeled. Beyond that, I have no idea what information he's sharing beyond personal opinions and stereotypes.

Just my uneducated (on the topic) opinion, but I can see that happening in some areas, and that some remodelers would see that a lot.

Let's say some big business (for example's sake, let's say Amazon) comes to your town. Relatively suddenly, lots of executive types have to be relocated to your town. There isn't enough suitable housing stock for these execs to move into, so they have to move into existing housing stock, and rehab what they buy.

They're used to nice upscale homes, but there's not enough upscale homes for the influx of buyers, so the buyers are calling on the handful of remodelers out there to do the upscaling for them.
