You could get a few Luminara flameless candles. They have a timer that turns itself on and off daily for 4 hours. They are cheery, and light up a dark space.
If I’m picturing it correctly, I would hang a painting over the table, find some objects that you like, with about 3 of the aforementioned candles.
I agree with others that you should spend time looking for objects that amuse you or have meaning to you, not some future garage sale junk just to fill a space. I have a collection of matte blue old pottery that I group together in a few places in my house. Find something like that that speaks to you.
My friend has some old cookie jars that are small and very kitchy, but grouped on a table they are colorful and fun. Whatever floats your boat.
I went to at home, found a few things I liked and the price was good.
Then I went to the Salvation Army store and remembered why I hate shopping at thrift stores. They have no idea how to price items. There was a Degas poster in a cheap plastic frame for $25. I can buy the poster new for $12 and the frame for $10. I asked for a discount and they refused. But then I saw a rare Madame Butterfly 1954 poster in a high quality frame for $3.99. I bought it but it's so annoying bc those stores don't know how to price.
Flea markets and garage/yard sales (check your local newspaper for listings). Also counts as free entertainment on the weekends. Also thrift stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army.

That's part of the fun. Going there to see what good quality items you can find for cheap. Don't think of it as a shopping trip. It's an adventure. Enjoy the hunt.
I check the Facebook Marketplace every day. I'm not looking for decorator items, but I sure see a lot of nice ones offered for sale and cheap. That wouldn't work if you must have something this week, but if you can wait and watch, you will end up with something really nice.
Also, it seems a good place to pick up seasonal decorations.
My son had expressed an interest in wooden duck decoys, but they run hundreds of dollars at auction. I got three really high quality wooden duck decoys for $25 total off of facebook marketplace. They are not genuine antiques, but the workmanship is outstanding. These things were not cheap when they were bought new.
I love the idea of adding a great table to your entryway! I totally understand your need for something a bit more substantial than a bowl. Here are some things that I think would be great for you and your space:
1. Flowers
2. candles
3. vases
4. Date Night Jar
You can buy these items easily available at amazon, Kraftysupply, Etsy, and Alibaba express at cheap prices.
What is a Date Night Jar?
