This thread was prompted by two things....
1) A young (20's) coworker who said he HATES washing dishes (from childhood) and therefore he'd pick having a dishwasher over having a washing machine (and dryer) in his apartment.
2) An old thread that was revived asking would people rather use a washer/dryer at home, or go to the laundromat (Personally I think there's no contest with that, but whatever....)

So I'll ask:
If you had to pick between having a dishwasher -- OR -- a washer and dryer in your home or apartment (not in the building's basement, in your unit)...

....which would it be dishwasher or washer/dryer?

I'll start things off: no contest. I'd rather have a washer/dryer any day of the week. Not having a dishwasher is no big deal (to me). I HAVE one and don't use it. I still wash dishes by hand. BUT, not having a washer and dryer at home...oh he11 no! No laundromat for me.

To paraphrase the late talk show host Morton Downey: What say you?

No contest with me either. I'd much rather have a washer/dryer. I've lived in several places where I didn't have a dishwasher, and washing dishes by hand isn't nearly as much of an inconvenience as going to the Laundromat (never mind the fact that you don't have to stockpile quarters). Also, I'm not so keen on the idea of putting my garments in washing machines recently used by strange people with who knows what on their clothes and sheets.

(I remember Mort Downey's red socks!)

The wife had new appliances put in the kitchen last year. We might have run the dishwasher 4 times. It's just me and her so we don't generate many dishes that need cleaning. So I vote washer/dryer that I use several times a week and so does the wife.

I love the dishwasher and use it daily. It sterilizes the dishes much better than you can do by hand.

But the washer and dryer is a much bigger labor saver.

Love my dish washer, but I would never want to wash clothes by hand. Do you need a scrub board or what? And drying clothes outside is a little hit or miss. Washer and dryer for sure. I don't mind hand washing dishes that much.

One of the few things that I miss about my last house is the dishwasher! There's no room for one in the kitchen of my (hopefully) forever home without totally redoing my cabinetry, so I simply am sure to stay on top of the dirty dishes as I they're made. It's really not that big of a deal to do them.

That being said, having a washer is a huge convenience that I'd not easily give up. As I hang out most of my laundry outside in the summer (weather permitting, of course) and hang it on the basement lines in the winter, the dryer is a a mere convenience to me, but is still a very nice thing to have for drying towels and items that I'd like to have dried quickly.

So, having a washer and dryer in the house definitely trumps having a dishwasher.

Dishwasher.
Because you can wash clothes in it, but you cannot wash dishes in a washer.
