A wooden fence was installed without attention to the property lines. Now 70 feet of fence has to be moved 2 feet. The property line goes through the dead center of a large tree. The tree can not be cut down and one contractor wanted to move the existing fence sections to as close to the tree as they can get on each side of the tree and use some sort of chain link fence with slats. This idea is not desired at all.
What other options are there to fence around the tree and I've seen photos where an open sided box went around one side of the tree. Post any images or other experiences with trees in the way. Thanks.

Not at the moment. A standard 6 foot high wooden fence sections with 1 x 6 fence boards and 4 x 4 posts. The tree is roughly 20 inches in diameter. Visually it's a straight 70 foot fence and the tree will be near the middle of the 70 feet of fence.

Can you instead negotiate with the neighbor and purchase the 2 feet of land * length and move the property line over and then leave the fence and tree where they are?

They paid someone to locate the property lines so they want the extra footage for their own 3 foot tall metal fence.

About 6 feet of the fence on one end extends into another lot. Selling or buying 2 feet of land may not work because a third property owner is involved. The 3rd doesn't care that 6 feet of fence is at the back of their lot. It's actually benefiting them. It would not work to buy 2 feet wide x 65 in length and then buy land 1 foot wide 35 feet in length. Whoever made the property lines may have had too many beers during lunch.

I think doing it that way would make it easy to adjust as the tree grows, too.

Take the fence along the property line, then move it on your side of the tree, around the tree, then back to the property line.

Does the fence belong to both of the property owners or just one of them? And do both of them have an interest in the tree? Typically, a tree on or near a property line is determined to be owned by one or the other, as almost always, more of the tree is on their side. If just one paid for the fence and owns it, that would play an important part in the solution.

If the fence is just two feet from the property line, is there a compelling reason it has to be moved? If not, I'd try to negotiate an agreement, that would not require the fence to be moved, but would acknowledge in writing, that it was not on the line. That would block a future attempt by one owner to gain adverse possession of the strip of property.
