Garage Door Opener
Can anyone suggest any good ones and what is a "reasonable" price to have one installed. I don't know if I trust my DH to install one or not. Our house is pre-wired already so maybe it will be easier. What are your thought? How easy is it to install a garage opener if the property is already pre wired?

Frankly 'If he can folow instructions and is fairly mechancil he should ahve no trouble. Just make sure to measure the height of the garage door when purchaing. I say this because I had to oder one because my doors are eight feet in height most standard are seven feet. The pre-wired normally means that the electical plug is installed where the open is attcahed. There are still closer safety and manual switches to be wired but they are step by step and easy.

I have installed several and it is very easy. Just follow the directions. You will need some angle iron to bolt to the ceiling joists to support the motor unit. Any hardware store will have stuff - just tell them what you are installing.
For models...
Ihave installed a couple genie models. Easy. They are good openers, but one blew the electical components after a lightnening strike nearby. Cost over $100 to replace the board.
Most of my installations have been Sears models. They install easy and work well. One of mine also blew a circuit board after the house next door was hit by lightnening. I replace with a model from Lowes for $100. This model - i forget the name - is exactly the same as the sears models with a slightly different outside case. Parts are exact, instructions, everything. I left everything up and only changed the motor unit.
I have two openers in my garage. THe oldest sears unit is 8 or 9 years old now. works fine for me.

Ditto, we just had ours installed last Saturday. We had them install for $135,but I could have done it myself. (LAZY) You cant even hear it and our bedroom is above the garage. Also both installers who came out both recommended Chamberlain over Genie.

I have the same one, definitely recommend it. I had someone install mine for $100, worth the money and probably cheaper than an ER visit for your husband.

Most of the openers you buy are made in the same factory. Sears, Home Depot, Lift master, Etc... are made by the Chamberlain Group and are very good operators. If you do decide to install it yourself (quite easy just follow instructions) try to get the one piece rail. They last longer, are quieter, and are easier to work with. The three piece rails that some have are an additional pain that can be avoided.

Alright guys. Thanks for your suggestion. I leave it up to DH to decided if he wants to install it or not.
