I just moved into my home. I am teying to figure out what kind of fiteplace I have. It has a key hole on the outside and it is shallow. A vent looking thing in the back and a grate area just inside. Contains a wood cradle but I do not see and gas lines. Someone has burnt wood in it. Please help.
A photo would be a big help.
It could be the gas line is capped just inside the fireplace. and they were using it as a wood burning fireplace.
Many fireplaces can do both. There should be a manufacturers label on the unit. With that information, you can determine exactly what the fireplace is rated for.
The vent in the back sounds like it might be gas only.
Call a local chimney sweep and have them check it out and tell you for sure what you have, and its condition.
Look for the ID plate-
Should be on either side of the fire box opening. Look for manufacturer's name and model number- google is your friend!
