I like the aluminum sheet idea. I think diamond plate might be the way to go.
As a close second choice, especially if you find out that they really are trying to steer you towards vinyl, is to go with orange snow fencing. That should do it!
Chain link is man-made. I think it sounds like it's adopted to ban wood fences... which is really strange.
There are issues with wood fencing. They attract termites. They also require a lot of maintenance, esp with large yards. In mine, it wasn't installed properly, so planks are constantly falling off, which requires me to get permission to go to neighbor's yard to screw it in properly. Unless they're stained, they start looking pretty bad over time, turn gray, rot, bow out in high humidity areas. The neighbors with black chain link or black vertical slat aluminum metal - their fences look new after years. The ones with wooden fencing - not.
You can get the black iron or pretend-iron vertical slats (they look nice, but pricey), chain link fence coated in black vinyl, vinyl. Then you get to super-expensive, like brick or stone columns with iron fencing in between.
