I have shifted to new home discarding my old vacuum cleaner (The Dyson DC40 upright vacuum) after serving me for 8 years, the floors of new room are hardwood and rug, I also bought a pet "miniature american shepherd" few weeks ago so which of the accompanying features should I look for while buying a vacuum cleaner?

I use a Dyson just fine on hardwood floors. Just turn off the brushes.

I use a Shark. After having used it for a couple years, I can't say I'm a huge fan of the bagless style, but the vacuum works well on all kinds of floors. My mom and sister both use the same, and pet hair isn't a problem.

Any vac that has the option to turn off the beater bar- up rights.

Canister vacs usually have two different heads- one with motorized beater bar, one without.
