Hey! There's a matching filthy toilet in the rental we're currently cleaning out. As far as I can tell has never been cleaned in nine years. The one we're dealing with has the same 'crud' as well as mildew. The crud could be removed with chemicals and abrasives, but getting the mildew stains out of the plastic seat would require soaking for several days in bleach, I suspect, so for us it's a replacement instead of trying to clean it.

Replacing a toilet is one of the easiest home repair jobs, IMHO. Turn off the water, unscrew the line. Undo two bolts and lift the toilet away. Scrape the waxy gunk off the floor, place a new wax seal there. Place the new toilet over the seal, put the two bolts back, fasten the water line and turn the water back on. So much easier than trying to clean the old one and it's still not going to be all that good even if you do get most of the gunk off.

Oh, when installing a new toilet, if you get car wax and wax it - inside and out - before it's used, it will be easy to clean for a long time afterwards.

I vote to replace the toilet.

The new seal will be worth it.

There are things that are worth the time and trouble. When Lowes has toilets starting at $88, cleaning a filthy toilet is not one of them.

If you're trying to sell the house.. I would just replace the toilet. We paid less than a hundred for the toilet in HD for our rental property.

If you want to try and clean it i would suggest something like Bar Keepers friend. its a mild acid. Mineral deposits are not tough to remove if you use something to break the bond it has on the porcelain.

If it needs a new seat/lid, get the kind that close slowly.

They don't slam shut. That is what we have here and i always forget when i use other toilets.

It is effective.

No reason to buy a new one. Elbow effort and a pummie do the job. Unless your looking to spend $$$ to get a water saving one anyway?

Sprinkle the Bar Keepers Friend, swish around, let it sit for a while

Might have to repeat.

We generally change out toilet seats every other year or so.

And for $200 you can get a complete Kohler kit including soft close seat.
