I painted the siding that the roofers replaced when they did the flashing, and I noticed the siding below the roof was loose from the vent to about half way down. Well turns out the 2x4's under the vent are pretty well rotted out. It seems the placement, and neglect of this vent caused a lot of damage, is it worth keeping that vent there?
The vent is on the wall of an addition and there is a sizable enough gap where the roofs meet

Without some sort of water diverter, that vent location is insane. If you do keep it, it at least needs a louvered cover.

I would assume that that is an attic vent...
If the attic has other adequate venting- yes, I would eliminate that vent. It's quite apparent that it's close proximity to the roof edge, no diverter flashing, and no gutter allowed water to run right into the vent.

If you feel you need that vent- move it further away from the roof edge and add the other things I previously mentioned.

Is it venting the roof space (attic or rafters) above a living space? Hard to tell, but the photo looks like that could be the case. Perhaps a traditional gable end vent could not be installed due to the roof line.

I took the louverd vent off, but there was a lot of caulk around it, and I'm guessing that it may have been put on after the fact. It is venting the attic space although be it very small
