You're worried about hotel costs while "furnishing" an apartment (condo?) that you're buying for hundreds of thousands of dollars in NYC? You can mail order ANYTHING, even a mattress....you can furnish the basics in a day for under $1,000. What am I missing?
Not sure why you put "furnishing" in quotes. I will be furnishing the apartment, eventually.
What you're missing is that I will be flying in from California to a completely empty apartment and I don't want to waste money on a hotel when I will have somewhere to stay - albeit without a bed . . . I am not good at putting anything together, I will be jet-lagged, and I am not sure how to coordinate deliveries . . . so a few little challenges I was asking for help in figuring out.

A resource for you:
Taskrabbit - A good source for freelance delivery help, folks to help you assemble furniture, etc. If you're not mechanically inclined, I doubt you'd have a truck necessary to pick stuff up, or put together furniture from a place like Wayfair, etc.
How many times are you planning on staying in NYC? To keep residency you need to be in Ca, 181 days. Those apts. plus assorted costs, maintenance, taxes etc. are gonna run you a ton of money. Have you considered one of the long term stay hotels or and AirBnB.
I spent 30 years working in NYC and those apts are NOT cheap. Then when you want to dump them, they can be tough too.

I know someone who bought a condo and summered there for about five years. After they sold it and calculated all of the costs they realized that they could have stayed in a long stay hotel for all that time for less cost.

Wow. You are a real lifesaver. I would have had no clue what-so-ever!
This idea doesn't seem well thought out - have you run through the financials with someone in terms of cost, taxes, upkeep, all related expenses...and in relationship to maintaining a residence in CA too?

Interesting. Maybe they bought high in the market. Also, you have to pay property taxes on condos - but not co-ops.
I am not sure what "long stay hotels" run, but the hotel I have been staying at runs close to $300 per night!
