I wanted to be a grown-up. And I was flat out told that as long as I lived with them, I had to do as they said.

I was 20 when I cut the cord, after being away for college. Dropped college in order to do it, too.

I left home at 22, but unfortunately returned at 24. Took me a decade to get away again - I mostly stayed because of my baby sister, who I am 18 years older than. I've been free ever since. Never again will I live with my mother. She's a difficult person to live with. I don't speak to my father at all.

They moved out of state, I was 18, had a job, social network, did not want to go, so moved in with a friend. Ended up joining the Navy shortly after anyway.

17.

Because my university was 3 hours away, and I hate commuting long distances.

I was 17, joined the Army and got away from a small backwards town. Wanted to leave since I was about 12 years old and told my folks that. "You'll be back, you'll miss (name of town)" they said. Once I left , I never looked back. Only visited a couple of times over my lifetime. They're gone now and I doubt that I'll ever visit that town again. Never regretted my decision.

The year was 2000 and I left for my first year of college. I returned a year later and transferred to a local state university while working full-time. Moved out again in 2008 after getting married. Living rent-free at my mom's house allowed me to save $44K in my 401(k) and enough for a down payment for our first house in 2012. Now my siblings and I want my mom to move in with one of us as we worry about her living alone.

When I grew up there was no question that unless you had something wrong with you and needed your parents or were taking over the family business you left home after graduating from high school. The arrangements were made during your Senior year in high school, you had a last summer home and in the fall you left.

I was fortunate because my parents helped but many of my classmates had it differently. A male friend was told by his father, "It's time for you to leave now."
