We have moved into a home that has steel siding. The siding is white. Not crazy about the color and am wondering if it can be painted? I am afraid that the paint will peel.

I've heard that you never have to paint the siding, but what happens if you don't like the color. (yikes) We live in Iowa so we have both the heat and cold.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Default What do you mean by siding?

How old????

Is this the old siding put on horizontal or is it the new metal clad building materials put on vertical? What are we talking about for age and vintage and general foobaa's.

Give us a clue before we dash into never space.

The old steel siding is already been painted by most folks a zillion times. Another paint job is immaterial. The new stuff we should talk.

I assume you're talking about horizontal lap-siding, not steel siding like is on barns and sheds.

That said, yes you can repaint it. The key is surface preparation and primer.

Talk to somebody at a paint store - and by that, I don't mean the 18-year old kid that's mixing paint at Home Depot. I'm talking about somebody like and owner/operator of a Sherwin Williams store, or something like that.

They actually make special paints for steel siding that will last for many years . Surface prepap is the key to any painting really. Because of the types of paint used most use a airless sprayer to apply.

The siding is only 1 - 2 years old. And yes according to the inspector it is steel siding that is hung horizontal. He was the one that said we would never have to paint it.

If the siding is as new as it is, I’d live with the color and get some benefit from the original cost of it before repainting.

If the siding color is white, you might want to try a “trim color” on the guttering or shutters at the window areas if you have them to gain a different appearance that you’d prefer more.

Why spend the time and money for an unneeded paint job?
