20 years is a long time.
20 years separates the 1970s from the 1990s.
20 year old kitchens in the 1990s looked very dated.
1970s yellows, oranges, and greens were replaced granite and stainless.

Yet, today it feels like a 20 year old kitchen still looks current.
This may be the effects of getting old and out of touch with the world.

Are 20 year old granite countertops woefully outdated? Or still perfectly fashionable?
Do 15-20 year old Stainless Steel appliances look laughably dated or are they still current?
If so, I have never seen a design trend last thing long.

What about light oak cabinets and white appliances?
Specifically, how outdated is this style that was common 20 years ago?
  • Light oak colored floors and cabinets
  • White appliances
  • (Laminate) granite countertops

I think that's considered "outdated" now.

Millennials will look at that varnished wood, white appliances, and formica countertop, and they'll either run screaming down the street or be taken by uncontrollable projectile vomiting.

There also appear to be - THE HORROR, THE HORROR - actual walls between the kitchen and the rest of the house.

Now if it were all grey and white with subway tile backsplash, completely open to the living room, and stainless steel appliances ( but never a stainless steel sink) and you replaced that laminate with granite or fake quartz, you'd be "on trend". But warm colors today will mean your house won't sell, your friends will start crossing the street when you walk by, followed by social ostracism, marital collapse, loss of employment, and homelessness. Better paint that kitchen grey and white if you don't want to end up in a cardboard box (that held a stainless steel Sub-Zero fridge) under the freeway.

Lol, the first thing I think when I see that countertop is "college", which was 20 years ago.

Are the bedrooms painted in strong colors with white trim?

But granite countertops and stainless steel appliances style is 20 years old.
How are they not just as grotesquely outdated by now?

But, granite is also a very a old style now.
When you see granite countertops, do you also think "college" or "1990s" ?
What new modern style has taken its place?

There is an element of being out of touch due to age. I grew up in the 1980s into the 1990s and remember all the big new houses with the cherry and walnut wood cabinets and those were considered premium luxury kitchens at the time. They still look nice to me, solid and durable and pleasant to the eye, so it's only when I look at the modern kitchens with marble and waterfall counters that I start to understand why people now consider 1990s kitchens dated.

Having said that, some of the 1980s "contemporary" kitchens that became dated by the late 1990s now have exact contemporaries among the latest trend kitchens and are very popular among some people.

Funny world we live in.

So? Tile floors are 1000's of years old.

Granite is popular since it's a natural substance, is durable, and clean in appearance while not showing every spec of dirt.

"Have kitchen remodel style trends stayed frozen for last 20 years ?"
No.

1. Quartz is the "in" material now for countertops.
2. Drawers in the lower cabinets, not cupboards.
3. White cabinets are all the rage.
4. Stainless appliance still popular, but manufacturers are trying hard to popularize other colors such as slate.
5. LED lighting has changed everything.

I had granite in my house in 1995, so yeah granite is outdated. Especially the common ones like Uba Tuba. They’re very busy and lots of folks don’t want that look anymore. Quartz is what many people prefer these days. No need for repeated sealing and pretty much indestructible.
