Actually in my experience, all the homes I lived in needed some work somewhere. We never once bought a brand new home that is perfect in every aspect; the oldest home we ever bought (and still own today) is more than 100 years old and that needed a lot of work! Even homes built in 1960s I gutted the inside and remodeled the whole interior.

Some of them is because there are irreplacable features associated with a home. My extended family is very big on living by the water; there aren't many of those homes to just freely switch to.

I like construction work anyway. may sound strange, but it's not unlike people who likes to chop wood.
