If you don't cheap out, then Home Automation can actually fulfill the promise of making your life easier by making technology transparent. Either by paying somebody to set it up right, or selling out your privacy to Ring/Nest/etc for their cloud-based services.

For example, I never touch the thermostats anymore, they "just do the right thing".

Better yet, the (expensive) hardware I chose does so without selling out my privacy to some cloud-based corporate service. And still works perfectly well as a normal 7-day scheduling thermostat in the case that they can't talk to the in-house "hub" (they are not cloud-tethered).
