You could buy a steel box spring it will fit anywhere that you can pretty much. I bought mine at sleeplikeabear.com. One other benefit was that I have more space underneath my bed as well. I have also heard of people cutting the box spring but I just think that might make it fall apart.

That's right. Buy two twin bed frames and boxes. Slide them together and the full-sized mattress ought to fit perfectly.

If you can get the mattress to approach the speed of light, it will get shorter and it should fit.

Getting ready to remodel, putting a spiral staircase in to open up the space.
I plan on furnishing the upper level before installing the staircase. So...I'm thinking the staircase may be removed to take up the mattress.

Just keep in mind that living space accessed by a spiral stair is not considered desirable by most home buyers!
