Cordless phone
Several days ago I purchased a Vtech with answer machine and 2 portable phones. The only thing I can say it's a piece of crap..... So I returned it and went to another store and purchased a Uniden CXA15698 with answer machine, corded phone base and a cordless phone. This is a very sweet phone...crystal clear and have walked 100 feet from the base with good reception.......

Update....
Lost power last night and this morning all lights are lit up. Called Uniden and they say it was a power surge and not covered under warranty..... At the end of the conversation I told them " I will not buy any more Uniden piece of crap" ...she hung up on me.....LOL....

Yeah I make sure my cordless phone base unit runs through the UPS that handles my office computers and the extension in the living room runs off the UPS that handles my entertainment center. Not working when the power is out is the one big drawback to cordless phones.
As far as it getting baked during a storm... that sucks but it happens if your equipment isn't behind a surge protector (at least).
When I moved a few months ago I upgraded my ancient wireless phone with a new Panasonic 2-line, 5.8 GHz cordless system (KX-TG6702B). Works great though I haven't tested the reception too far out. If it reaches the garage I'll be adding a station out there and another in the bed room.

Yeah the base to my phone is in my office on the same shelf as the router/NAS/switch/modem/etc so it just goes right into the same UPS as those. The one in the living room is on a shelf right next to the tv so same deal it is close enough to share the entertainment center's UPS. The others will just have to take their chances, lol.
As long as I have the base powered during a blackout and can still make/take calls if I need to it's all good.
Get a single unit protector or a quality strip for the stations at least but if it was me I'd battery backup the base so you have it in emergencies.

The base set is corded, so if no power it will still work. Still don't think it was a surge, just off for awhile. Can't believe the way Uniden treats the customers...basically there is NO warranty.....

Since you just bought it, I would take it back to the place you got it and ask for a refund or replacement. You have no proof there was a power surge, and if everything else in your house is fine, then it is not likely there was one.
Power surges will usually take out stuff with circuit boards first: garage door openers, microwaves and TV's seem to be the first to go. Phones and such are a close second.
I would take the position of you bought this a short time ago, and NOW it's not working. If you paid by credit card, you sometimes have recourse through them.

I will take it back Friday while I'm in town and put a little pressure on them. I do know they have a 14 day return policy. This is just absurd from what I'm getting from Uniden....
Just received email from Uniden:
"Thank you for contacting Uniden with your question.
If you lose power and it comes back on there is a large spike of electricty coming back into the home. This is called a surge. Electrical damage is not covered under the warranty.
Thank you for choosing Uniden."
New update:
PLuging a item into a working outlet that has power has a stable flow. When power is lost and comes back on ther is a large spike or rush back into the home. We can not help if items are damaged by outages.
Please read page 62 of your manual and it will explain all. Starting 2/3 down the page where is states notice. Im closing this case no need to reply!
(page 62 states about a lightning strike as a surge)....LOL....

I got rid of the house phone and we only have cell phones. Why have the extra line that usually the only calls we get are from salespeople? Having only the cell phone ends any problems with the house phone.
