Default What is the smallest lot you could tolerate having?

An acre?

A half acre?

A quarter acre?

Less?

And what would do you if you had a neighbor who played loud rock music several times a week? So loud you could hear it through your walls?

I do not like living so close you can hear everything going on in the house next door. I used to live where I was surrounded by nothing but acres of farmland and my nearest neighbor was over a mile away and I loved it. Here in TX I can walk 20 steps from my front door to my neighbors front door and I hate being that close, but I love my neighbors. I think as long as living that close to someone is tolerable I could handle it as I have been for 3 years, but not if they were noisy like your neighbors. Contact your local law enforcement office and ask if there is a noise ordiance in your area. If so, report them for disturbing the peace.

I am on a half acre now, and the houses are close on all sides. I would prefer an acre, or a corner lot. Actually, I would prefer acreage, but my husband would curl up in a ball and die if we lived out in the country.

I don't think I would want to live on a lot that is much less than 1/4 acre again. When we lived in Boise, our home was on .15 of an acre, and so was everyone else in the neighborhood. We had a similar situation in that the kids that lived behind us had a rock band. I love rock, but I don't want to have it shaking my windows! We spoke to them once about it, but nothing changed. They said they didn't have anywhere else to practice. We ended up checking with the noise ordinance and eventually had the police come talk to them. I guess if you have an overall good raport with your neighbors, I would suggest talking to them first. In my experience it didn't work for us.

I grew up on 10 acres of woods, surrounded by 100's of acres of woods. I eventually bought a 2 acre corner lot at age 18 and built a 2 bedroom cabin. That was back in 1978. I still live in that cabin on the 2 acres at age 46. Borders a wildlife refuge so I still have woods. Nice and private. I have a half acre waterfront lot on an island which is very remote. I'm pretty sure I could never live where I looked out the window into the neighbors house. Something like a rock band rattling windows would fer sure cause me to slingshot trashcans onto the neighbors roof or something!
I can live on half an acre with a view like this all day long!

I prefer several acres but ill have to live in the woods or some rural area to afford this much land. Ill be happy to take 1/4 acres in the city. I prefer a nice house over lots of land

I would prefer acres, woods or rural. I have had a terrible experience with a neighbor, beyond horrible !
With this in mind, what would you do ?
We currently are renting on a 20 acre island and have been here for 4 months.
We are in the searching mode for property ,again. While looking for rural, we stumble across a 1.31 acre corner lot in a neighborhood. It is zoned as 2 properties, but being sold as 1. It has a doublewide (3/2) mobile home and a 1/1 cottage on the property. Granted, it isn't pretty ! We have done several rehabs in the past, and we cannot cross this property off the list. We have been out every weekend searching and have seen some pretty scary rural living. This particular neighborhood is one of the better we have seen, but not the best. Has a ton of possibilities, and will probably appreciate quicker than the rural places we have been looking at.
I have been asking my self this question.... (being new to the area) if we purchase rural and we decide we want to leave, I honestly believe it will take a lifetime to sell. So it will be a longtime comitment. If we purchase this corner lot, do alot of cleanup, and some repairs, we will have an income property and a place to live from the get go. We have an appointment on Saturday to see the double property and get an idea of what it wil take to make livable for "us". Both are presently rented, so I would have to assume that they are somewhat liveable, but that does not mean liveable for "us".
I have never lived in a mobile home, and quite frankly, don't care to (scared of the unknown). It is a beautiful lot. Lots of potential. Most of the home/trailers/modulars surrounding are either nice, or O.K., a block over the homes are worth close to a milloin due to waterfront and being massive. Appears that the neighborhood is trying to clean up. It is on an island (per say) that is considered one of the better parts of town. This particular area should appreciate quicker than rural.
So what do you think? First purchase in this state, do we be safe with purchasing something that we may be able to get rid of or rent if we don't like it, or go for the dream of having 4-10 acres in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE (by nowhere, I mean not even a gas station or convienence store for 30 miles)?
We can probably obtain this property for less than $100,000, and pay little more than 50% cash for it, giving us a very low mortgage .
Any thoughts ????

I'm on 1/3, which is about right for me. 1/4 or less would be too small.

We live on a 1/2 acre lot, right now. But, I would prefer something larger, much larger! I don't like feeling squeezed by neighbors, good, bad, or otherwise. I'm not really a people person, although I'm fairly patient and tolerant of other folk's cut-ups, within reason, (after all, I would like them to be tolerant of me). However, if one can't get one's neighbors to cooperate, particularly when it comes to excessive noise, then I would say it's time to bring the law into the picture. Which is exactly my point about more acreage. The further away you are from the neighbors, the less you can bother each other!

I've never lived anywhere with anything larger than what most people would call a 'postage stamp' lawn where backyards were mostly shared between houses, until my parents moved to a 3/4 acre lot when I was 18, and that seems huge (I remember the first thing I said when they moved out there was 'I am not mowing this thing'). My entire adult life (15+ years) I've lived in apartments, so I guess I don't really know what the smallest lot I could tolerate having since most of my 'lots' have consisted of porches or fire-escapes.

That being said, I wouldn't mind a little yard like I had growing up that was big enough to have a small garden and small enough to mow in less than an hour with either a push mower or one of those old fashioned reel mowers (which is what a lot of people who actually have lawns use by me because they are so tiny).
