Much more in Alaska than in Florida. There is no single answer.

too many factors, like all of the above have posted.
Did you know you can call the utility company and ask them for the previous years' monthly bills????? They will go back a full year for you and give you per month or the average. Call them and ask.
Don't know what it is off hand. maybe ConEd?

On L.I. you're talking either oil or gas. Electric costs here are outrageous, so no one in their right mind uses electric heat.
If it's gas heat, you can call National Grid (used to be called Keyspan until a month or so ago) with the address and maybe they will give it to you. Or you can ask the seller's agent, but don't take their word for it... ask for copies of bills.
If it's oil heat, you'd need to know the name of the oil company they used, and again maybe the company will give it to you but probably not. After all, that isn't a matter of public record. Best best is to ask the seller's agent for either copies of the bills, or copies of the checks.
There are SOO many variables that it's impossible to guestimate. One- or two-story house? Energy efficient windows or old leaky ones? Lots of windows or only a few? High ceilings or 8 foot? Attic insulated well, or not? What kind of siding? How old is the heating system (burner, boiler, air handler, whatever) and what is its efficiency rating if newer? Setback thermostat or not? How many heating zones and how warm is each kept?
Just as an example, we used to own a 4000 sq foot Colonial until we sold it this spring. Three zones, on programmed setback thermostats but never any warmer than 72F at the warmest setting. Oil baseboard heat. Upgraded windows, insulation, insulated siding, everything 3 years ago. My SO's brother lives in a 2000 sf two-story house with oil heat kept no warmer than 68-69F but with the original siding, windows, roof, insulation etc from the 1970s. Not sure how old his heating system is but it's at least 10 years if not older. He spent as much on oil deliveries last winter as we did (and with the same oil company and price lock) to heat a house HALF the size of ours!

We have electric (geothermal, 2800 sq ft house) and our monthly budget is around $190. We keep the air at about 78 and the heat at about 68.
