Pens and small plastic objects don't flush very well either.

The only way a toilet can leak down between flushes is if the rubber flapper at the bottom is letting water pass from the tank to the bowl. When it leaks down far enough the tank will refill again and the process just keeps repeating.
Unless the the tank is cracked but then you would see water on the floor.
A clogged vent, or tree roots, or any other obstruction that prevents good drainage can make for a slow flush but it wont cause the tank to leak down between flushes.
It sounds like your flapper ain't flopping right. Or just needs replaced.
This will raise your water bill because water is always being replaced to fill the tank again because the tank is being emptied by the leaky flapper.
The sound you hear is probably the tank refilling when you have no reason to expect it to.

The water will certainly go up and down if there is tree roots in the pipe.

You can trust me on that. Mine did.

I watched it happening for a few days trying to figure out what the problem was before I had the overflow. Once the roots were gone, the water level has stayed the same.

Same here on the partial clog and I know the vent thing too.

eeeeewwww.....

I don't even want to revisit the situation.

Let's just say that I shared a house with some people years ago and almost every morning, before work, I had the pleasure of cleaning up the bathroom floor due to a clogged vent.

Your worst imagination is probably right...

Trust me... it was not a good way to start out your day!

Default Upstairs toilet makes occasional "glug" sound

My upstairs toilet makes a "glug" sound every few minutes, but otherwise works fine. The bowl water level is normal, and it flushes strongly.I replaced the flapper valve last year.

Check the vent lines as they can create a suction effect when other lines drain.
