I like to cook but generally am cooking for no more than 3 people, frequently just for myself - for me smaller kitchens have worked better. One of the best kitchens I ever used was in an efficiency apartment in the "Howell House" apartments on Peachtree in Atlanta (no doubt the building is still there). Anyway it was tiny, little under-counter fridge, small sink, apartment size gas stove - I could cook whatever I wanted without taking even one step.
A small kitchen works better with small or European sized appliances - if you jam big honking appliances intended for a bigger kitchen into a small one it's crowded of course.
House in Johnstown, Colorado - when I bought it had huge stove, big fridge in a small kitchen, big double sink monopolized counter space. Re-designed it with an under-counter Sub-Zero fridge, apartment size gas stove, single basin sink (one with a little pocket for a disposal up in the corner) and tile countertops, with glass-fronted cabinets, little "appliance garages" on both sides of the counter. It worked for me. Only regret was the tile countertops, the grout is hard to keep clean - much bette to use stone, synthetic stone, even Formica - any smooth surface would have been better.
In a way I miss that place, although Johnstown has metasticized into a big bedroom community for Denver - was a nice place when I was there though.
