So my house is new and we lit the fireplace tonight because its cold here in CLT. However, its giving off a stinky smell. I'm assuming this will wear off eventually??? Hopefully...???

It could be just some dust and debris burning off. Do you have a chimney? If the smell continues I would check the chimney in the morning. Could be a dead animal.

is it a gas fireplace?

You said your house is new; is that a newly built house?

I was told and read that when you use a gas fireplace for the first few times you will smell residue of I think grease or oil burning off. This was something that occured during the manufacturing of the fireplace and would go away after a few uses.

If I am wrong some one please correct me.

It is a gas fireplace. It kinda smells like burning dust. Its very strong. There's no chimney at all..Just an exhaust port outside. I hope it fades cause it's not enjoyable.

There is an issue with some of the ceramic logs used in these fireplaces. Do some searching around on the net and you'll run across complaints about them. IIRC, some are better than others. A call to your gas company may get you some information on options.

I suspect what you're smelling is a combination of the paint, oil, dust, etc. that is on any new gas fireplace ductwork, grate, logs, ceramic parts, etc. The smell should eventually go away. Using the fireplace will burn-off the smell faster.
