Default converting a double sink to a single

The last owners of my house took the old double sink out and put in a single and put a dishwasher in place. the dishwasher is a in-cabinet style and they took what looks like 1x2s down over the hole and stuck tile in its place. well now the tile is comming up and there are ants living under the tiles in sumer. anyone have any suggestions to get rid of this and what to put down? i want something that is going to last for a while.

I know you dont want to hear this but the last owners were butchers. Sounds like what they did doomed you to now needing a new kitchen. Sounds like you are stuck with a hodge podge of a jury rigged mess.

I dont understand what you mean with your tile situation but if you have a kitchen that had no DW then that tells me your kitchen is old enough to have Dinosaur footprints in it.

Good luck

You mean they tiled the top of the counter where the 2'nd half of the double sink used to be?

Did you consider just re-tiling? Or better still, get a piece of laminate counter-top cut to size at your local hardware store, and install that. Whatever you do, it sounds like a good bit of work. And it does sound like your kitchen may need some updating. Good Luck!
