what would/will you compromise on when buying a home?
I asked the other day what people are looking for in a house. I am curious what you would or did compromise on? Since I doubt anyone ever finds the "perfect" house in every aspect, I just wondered what you would accept. For us I guess it would be the size. I am not going to get fixated on a specific square footage. As long as it is close to the square footage we would like, I'd be fine with that.

Yard size.
It's a foregone conclusion that any reasonably priced (for me) house that's reasonably close to RTP won't have much yard.

good point. I guess if the house were on a quiet street the kids are probably going to play in the street. We live on a cul de sac right now and my kids are always in the street. skateboards/roller blades, etc dont really work well on grass :-)

I gave up a coat closet by the front door....though I miss it. The house simply had everything else and then some.
We were willing to compromise on a basement (but didn't have to).

Wow...that's odd. I don't think I've ever seen a house without one, that I can recall.

we actually compromised on a couple things.
1. basement-thought I would miss it since our old house had the play room in the basement but the bonus room has taken over and doesnt have that "dungeon" fell that a basement sometimes has
2. fifth bedroom-really wanted one for out of town guests but after looking at houses for a while my husband made a good point...do we really want to heat, pay property taxes on an extra room that will get used once or twice a year. We actuallly have two storage areas off our bonus room, one of which could be finished to a small guest room/office if we ever decide we want the extra space
3. perfectly flat lot. our driveway is on a incline-we wanted a flat driveway for our son to play basketball but he actually doesn't mind dragging the hoop to the bottom of the driveway and play. Helps him perfect his "three point" shot
We just fell in love with the house we bought once we saw the inside. In a perfect world I guess we would find the perfect house but we are very happy in our "un perfect house"

Yeah.....but there really isn't a place to put one. The most logical place for one is taken up by the stairs going down stairs.....so there you go....lol!

We compromised having a large master. We wanted a master on the first floor, so that we could shut off the top floor when we didn't have guests or the kids visiting, but the house we fell in love with has a small master. I am coming from a very large vaulted ceiling 23x20 master with a bathroom the size of some small countries, and now we are going to be in a 15x14, yikes.
The yard and the wrap around porch make everything okay though. I love to be outside and sitting outside, so I could give up a lot for the beautiful land we have and the wonderful wrap around porch.
