The OP said it was forced hot water. If it was over firing, should have popped the relief valve long ago. But the description was not inspiring, puppy probably is due for replacement. Usually they are so inefficient it is a money maker to replace. Plus unreliable, always fails at the wrong time. You can plug a bunch of money after bad, I would think about a new boiler.

Those old puppies don't normally explode, too many weak points, something is always leaking anyway. The relief valve has a thermal sensor and it usually pops off on that long before pressure gets out of hand, anything over boiling and those pipes will be pounding like drums. Ain't like a hot water heater gone wild, system is not solid but has an expansion tank.

It probably is time to have it looked at by a pro, but don't sound like it is worth plugging much money into repairs.
