Earlier this year we moved to a new construction home and now have the opportunity to watch other houses around us being built (we have learned a lot about the construction process). The house next door has it's foundation and, today, I saw them putting up the waterproofing. The guys are dressed in these hazmat-type suits (covering them from head to toe including masks). They are spreading some black stuff that looks like tar and then placing yellow foam-ish board that they are cutting to size to cover the black "tar stuff".

What exactly is all that stuff... and is it so dangerous that they have to wear those suits and masks? It looks like something out of E.T.!

That is a polymar based waterproofing material. And the material that they are putting over it is nothing more than fiberglass mat board. It acts as a wicking agent to draw moisture down to the drain system. It also helps protect the waterproofing membrane when the foundation is backfilled.
The "suits" are just a polypropylene suit so they don't get that crap all over themselves-

If you ever got that in your hair (either on your head or arms) or on your clothing then you would realize that stuff doesn't come off with anything. Better to wear a full protection hot suit and save your work clothes and not be walking around with large black blotches all over your arms, than be cool and comfy but a huge mess at the end of the day.

Another thing to wear those suits with is the spray foam insulation. that stuff is awful to get off your body and out of your clothes.

Talking Or............

Well it could be the waterproofing installers, or......something to do with the toxic waste dump in the subdivision.

What??? Oh, never mind.

****Disclosure*****
The above was meant as an attempt at humor and in no way suggests there is or might be a toxic waste dump in your area - as far as you know.

Nope ... you are wrong ... it's those Pods ... Invasion of the Body Snatchers ... I know cause I saw that movie! (Attempt at more sick humor)

Shwa you are wise to question things like that ... the hazmat-suits would have raised a question or two for me.
