Default Creaky wood floors

We have wood floors upstairs in our master bedroom, and this winter they are soooo creaky. You couldn't sneak around this house if you tried. Plus there are new creaks downstairs too. Are there any remedies for this? I heard baby powder can help, but can anything else be done? Our home is about 16 yrs old. Thanks...

A humidifier might help.
The boards may have shrunk in winter dry air, moving just a little.

Google for site on how to fix ceaking wood floors. It involves putting facteners to sdtop the creling or you can hire a professional' So9me creaking can be expected from old wood floors but alot can be eliminated.

Most likely it is a loose screw/nail between the subfloor and your wood floor.

Default Only one thing really works.......

There are no magic solutions.

I take a nail gun, find the joists exactly, mark them with a chauk line, shoot a ton of nails into the joists. Got to be very careful not to hit any pipes or wires. Talking using 3.5" nails power driven and lots of them.

Then to hide it all you usually have to cover the floor with another thin layer like plywood or whateve. Then carpet the whole thing. No more squeeks. Sort of also helps to put a layer of rosin paper or 15# roofing felt between the layers. I also use a very thin coat of tar on both sides of the paper / felt.

Amazing how solid the floors feel after you do a treatment like that.

I have the same problem and have been looking into it. Usually it means your floorboards have moved away from the subfloor or the subfloor has moved away from the joists. Maybe both.

Can you access the subfloor/joists from below? If so, find the creaks and try inserting a shim with wood glue between the joists and subfloor. There are also screws to use but you best look that up yourself as it requires a certain angle and I am still researching it.

If floors are carpeted there is a tool that comes with screws that shear at the sub floor level. After you put them in and break them off they are undetectable.

If you usually don't notice the noise during other times of the year- this is definitely your answer.

Or just call it the day and consider it a built in burglar alarm.
