Yesterday I was inspecting a house and was in a rear bathroom without windows. All of a sudden I heard a train horn that sounded like it was in the next room, then the rumble, and then the house started shaking.
I went into the back yard and probably ten feet from the rear fence were railroad tracks, about 6 feet higher than the yard. There was a detached work shop about 5 feet from the fence (about 15 feet from the tracks). It was a masonry block building and it had some of the largest cracks I have ever seen in block walls.
I could not imagine living in that house. The rear fence was probably 40 feet from the back of the house.
My hometown was built around the railroads...they're the reason the town exists...four main lines came into town and intersected, at one time (now it's down to two). So basically EVERY SINGLE HOUSE IN TOWN is at least somewhat adjacent to the railroad. There simply IS no such thing as "not living by the trains."
