In terms of operating costs, gas (especially if it is natural gas) is generally cheaper to operate. However, keep in mind that gas ovens generally don't heat as evenly as electric ovens. In truth, I personally think the best way to go is a dual fuel range (gas cooktop and electric oven), or have a separate gas cooktop and electric wall oven (which is what we have).
