Default There are thatched roof in the USA

There are properties with thatched roof but it is not all that common.

You find many examples in historical type villages based around Pilgrim type houses. The materials vary by region. Many of those type villages / houses are working type museums.

Part of the problem probably is the building codes but you also have problems finding folks with the necessary skills and proper building materials. Most of the common commercial grain stalks are not long enough. There is not that much purpose grown materials commonly available.

Suppose one could fire proof the roof but it is not an idea that has caught on in modern houses in the USA, you don't find it much in ordinary standard houses that the average folk live in.

Cecil White, American-born, English-trained, Master Thatcher. From Centralia, Washington. Here's an example of his work:

Thatch Roof

That's at the Anne Hathaway Cottage at the Shakespeare Gardens, Wessington Springs, Jerauld County, South Dakota. Odd things you'll find out here on the prairie, eh?
