Question Refinishing cast aluminum bird bath

I have a cast aluminum bird bath with a verdigris finish which is getting pock-marked and scabby looking in the bath part.....does anyone out there know how to refinish it? Can it be sanded down with regular sandpaper and then painted or does it have to be sandblasted?
Thanks .....

You can hand sand it. It would be alot of work and the results would probably not be as good as w/ using a sandblaster. It would take a competent blaster less then 15 min. to get the job done.
