Default Cigarette smell in wood desk?

I just picked up a great little desk at a consignment shop today for my son. It's wood-framed with a veneer top. Driving it home, I realized the car reeked of smoke from this desk. Of course, the shop won't take it back.
I guess I should have known to smell things before I buy them. I know, I know, I really should have, but desks are not what I usually think to smell.
Once home, I took it out and wiped it down with Murphy's Oil soap and warm water, then let it sit in the sun for a few hours. Still smells, but not as bad. Then I febreezed the heck out of it in the garage.
Anybody have any more ideas? Any chance to get rid of the smell altogether? His little head will be close to the desk surface, so I don't want it to stink. Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Wipe down the interior with a diluted water/bleach mix and leave the drawers open to air dry at least overnight. Buy a couple bags of cedar shavings.....the same stuff you put inside hamster cages! Fill a few knee-high sheer stockings with the shavings and thumb-tack them to the interior back of the desk so the drawers will still close. Just leave them a few days and change if necessary until the smoke smell is gone. It'll freshen up the inside pretty quickly.

Wash the piece with some warm water and a Murphy's Oil Soap mixture. Remember, you can wash wood furniture but not soak or saturate it! First take out the drawer and any removable parts. Use a sponge to wash the wood and follow-up immediately with a soft cloth (an old t-shirt would work just fine) so the water-mixture is not sitting/collecting on the piece. Do this outside, preferably on a sunny day. Let the piece dry in direct sunlight. The sunlight and outdoors will also air it out and kill any bacteria. finally, I spray Lysol dysinfectant directly on the piece to rid it of any other smells. Also, follow-up with Bugnubs' suggestion about putting cedar in the piece. Best of luck on your project!

Thanks, both of you! I repeated the Murphy's oil wash today and the desk is currently sitting out in the sun. The drawers don't come out, so they're all sitting open. The cedar chips are a great idea! I'll pick some up tomorrow.
I picked up a similar-looking chair today. You can bet I smelled it really well before I paid!
