How much do these homes cost, Nacht? Where are they located?
I can't give away too much info or you'll be able to figure out which company I'm talking about. Gotta protect my friend's identity.
The builders he works with do mainly higher end homes ($500k+) but they also do homes in the $250k - $500 range. Most of the neighborhoods are in Charlotte but they also build in Raleigh. Of course that brings up another point, all-brick homes are much more common in Charlotte than Raleigh.
Vicki is 100% right. If people in lower end homes were willing to give up a little space then they could probably afford brick but most just have to get that 3,000 sq ft house.
I totally agree. If you want a McMansion, it makes sense to slap vinyl on that multilevel home on the 1/8 acre lot. Its even more comical to see the houses with stone or brick on the front and then three other sides of vinyl.
I myself prefer, stone, brick and hardiplank. Hubby will not even look at a vinyl house as he is disgusted with the "look" of it.
But in all fairness if that is all one can afford, or even those that prefer vinyl then so be it. Let them alone,

I don't live in a McMansion...though to be honest, I see brick on more of them then anything else.
You don't consider those 1960s, 1000sq ft houses, haven't been updated since then, to be an actual alternative do you? Sure you can find them, but you'd have to put in scores of time and money to actually have a nice home.
Yep....I'm getting brick/stone front on my house, but if I wanted 4-sides brick, it would have cost an additional $50,000. You seem to imply that $280/mo isn't that much.
So instead, I'll stick with vinyl. In 20 years, when it starts looking bad, I'll replace it with something better then (hopefully I'll be in a better financial situation in 20 years) Maybe I'll install brick, or I'll use the new carbon-nanotube-enforced/indestructable building materials that they'll invent in the year 2020. But at least my house will look fine for 20 years.
If brick were an option in the Centex community I am building in, I would have considered brick...love brick... my front facade will be partial brick on the lower...vinyl on the upper and vinyl on the remaining 3 sides of the home... If this option is offered, is it an affordable option at the time...I prefer vinyl over any material that would need painting in years to come...so although not crazy about vinyl siding, the maintenance factor is what makes it more appealing...power wash the house a few times a year and your done...
In reality vinyl is not cheaper to use than wood or hardyplank or brick. It has been used because it is quited as maintence free.
That is the bottom line.
Vinyl is not cheaper then brick? What planet are you from? Really. Maintaince free or not (which I don't believe, nothing about home ownership is maintaince free) it's not as exepensive, and even brick has maintaince.

1) Pay the additional $50,000 to put brick on all sides of my house.
...or...
2) Put up with insults to my choice of priorities on City-Data.com.
Welcome to NC! It's a regional thing as far as I can tell. Hardiplank and brick are the most desired siding products, vinyl is considered the low-end siding choice. In other areas of the country there's no fiber cement product used at all, such as my current area of NY where everything is vinyl. I'm personally not exciting about painting my hardiplank. However I'm told it holds paint longer than real wood so it shouldn't require as frequent of a paint job. Guess I'll find out.
