I love bamboo in that its more environmentally friendly and reasonably priced and I've read that its more water resistant that some other wood. What do you think? I imagine if I apply polyurethane to any floor, the water resistance would be about the same. In my research I'm also reading that bamboo might scratch more easily that I realized?
Which is the most durable wood? Maple? Oak? Is white oak any harder or softer than red oak?
What is engineered wood?
In my last house I had unstained maple which was great in that when there was a scratch I was able to sand it out and apply clear urethane and not worry about having to find the matching stain (and the natural color was lovely). Do you see any problem with putting down something like unfinished oak and then applying poly to the whole surface to give water resistance?
Can installers often match prices on material with places like Lumber Liquidators? Would they have a problem with me ordering from LL (with their instructions for # of boxes, trim pieces, etc.) and then paying them to install, or do installers count on making money from marking up the product in addition to installation?
