hi,
if you plan on demolishing an old house and building a new house on a piece of land, is it recommended to test/inspect for lead paint or is that unnecessary?

Unless your state or locality has a requirement for testing before a demolition then I would not be concerned about it. You will most likely need a demolition permit issues by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ, city, town, county, etc.). You can check with them to see if it is necessary. In any case I would have it written into your contract with the demolition people that they are responsible for obtaining and properly executing any required permits and/or special requirements.

If you have lead paint, you may have asbestos. I find that being a more easily recognizable substance should you try to dispose of it at a waste facility. Like the other poster said, I'd check with the requirements as you could get a hefty fine.
