Hi all - I was hoping someone more experienced in home-ownership can help. Over the weekend one of my glass patio doors shattered (double pane, one developed a crack on Friday and the pressure differential finished it off on Saturday - I was the only one home so it was quite the scare). Does anyone have any experience with this or any recommendations on who to call/what to do? It's boarded up and relatively safe (for now)... A few facts: 1. The house is less than four years old and was built by McCar (Cary). The handbook says after 1 year, this would be covered by the manufacturer's warranty if applicable. 2. The door maker is Guardian. I am trying to find a dealer in the area but you have to wait for them to get a hold of you so I don't even know if they offer a warranty. 3. I'm waiting for a quote from a glass repair shop. Does anyone have any good experiences with local shops in case I have to do it that way? 4. I'm also waiting for my homeowner's insurance to call me back - anyone know if this is usually covered by standard policies? Any and all help is appreciated! -Shattered in Cary

From what you describe I have a theory. Why would any glass just up and break with no one around? I suspect you had some settling. Perhaps the header above the slider doors was inadequate and sagged under the weight it was supposed to carry. If that header sagged then it would put great pressure down on the glass window or door. And since a slider door is likely from 4' and larger, an inadequate header has more potential of sagging.

Do not buy or get a replacement door until you have that looked at first. Your Guardian door will not be covered under warranty if the failure was caused by poor construction practices.

You were not clear if your home warranty was expired or not. Some where in your contract to buy that home is some tiny print that you signed all of your rights away. You without knowing signed something saying you agree to give up your right to sue. You also agree to jump through the endless hopeless hoops of arbitration. And guess who the Arbitrator is. Yea him and the builder are wife swappers. Do you think you have a chance in hell?

You can try your homeowners insurance company if the builder will not fix it. They will put pressure on them to fix it and if they dont, the insurance company may pay you and they will sue the builder to recover.

There used to be a company called HOW which would help but they seem to be dying a slow death.
Good luck....
