We have a fairly new (2 year old) Goodman Heat pump w/gas back system, replacing a 20 year old Carrier gas furnance and seperate A/C systems.
They were properly installed, they work much better than my last house that had two Heil units. We're saving a lot of money on natural gas costs, the a/c/ works really well and we have no complaints. It would have cost $5,000 more to go with a Trane or other top brand name.
Just the savings on ng costs we should realize full payback on our system in 10 years. I'm not looking back, lol.
Just for the record at 10 years you should be planning or at minimum saving to get another one. That doesn't mean it may not last 40 years but after 10 you're on borrowed time. It's not like the GE products of decades ago that were built like tanks. To increase efficiency while maintaining the lowest cost possible to the public, something you can clearly see is an interest in here, longevity is sacrificed.
Harry, all the building codes changed here after Andrew and then the hurricanes of '04. I have seen the code changes with my own eyes........ the gals at permitting are practically family!
One has to have a 4" pad now, and a separate breaker for the heat pump and AC.
My pad is 2", and the old pump/AC were wired up on one line.....unless I wanna break code, I gotta do it.
I have a 28 by 60 with a Goodman heat/ac.now one year old with 10 year warranty.
Extremely pleased, has now run 24/7 since end of may at 78 degree's.Electric bill very reasonable.I have a 3 1/2 ton unit.Cost with duct, electric and air return $3200.Removed propane furnace and ac.
The service contract is the one being refereed to above. that keeps you from having to pay that $100+/hr rate to have those warrantied parts replaced. Most of those type of contracts require the servicing company also do PM at least once a year. Just an FYI...
Don't have sears service your old unit. Their servicemen get a percentage of the sale price if you buy a new ac unit from sears. They make more money if they fail to repair your old one and you get stuck with having to spend thousands when possibly all you needed was freon.
If you need freon you have a leak which needs to be prepared.
