Real wood treads with a runner up the middle.

I'd go with wood but not the same t and g as the floors, more of a solid piece. A runner would look much better than full on carpet imho.

I would go with wood stairs, painted riser and berber runner as once our carpet is picked up and floors refinished, that is what I'm doing. We found White maple hardwood floors under our carpet so we are doing a room at a time. I was concerned about the steps being slippery also, but we are doing the floors in satin finish.

I have wood stairs with white painted risers. I chose to not put carpet on them because, having owned a place with carpeted stairs, I have spent way too much time balancing a vaccumn and carpet cleaner on them! Now, I just sweep them with a small dustbrush, it's much easier.

If the home will have an elderly/mobility impaired person, I would consider carpet, for the reason that the wood 'can' be slick. I do tell my kids 'no running up/down the stairs!'.

Ditto the above. I have wood stairs with white painted risers and I love them. Having had carpeted stairs previously, this is a huge improvement in terms of cleanliness... and yes, I have children. A good Magic Eraser is all you'll need to keep those white risers looking crisp. The runner-less wood stairs here were actually one of the biggest selling points for me on the whole house!

+1
I have kids, and I don't have a big scuff mark problem on my white risers, I've maybe hit a couple of spots with a magic eraser twice in three years. I also don't have molding where the wood stairs meets the wall. But I do have molding on the landing where there is the prefabricated wood. Never noticed till I took a look now

I'm all wood, too (carpet in bedrooms only). I love the look of a runner, but don't like to vacuum stairs, so we don't do a runner. Never had a slipping problem....

I see this thread came back alive. We went with wood treads (using the engineered wood from our floors) with painted risers. We love them and made the right choice. White risers not getting dirty and having used the planks on the stairs with bevels, it gives the steps traction (no slipping).

Beautiful! That would have been my choice as well. Good job.

We've had both carpet and wood in the past. Definitely wood w/ painted risers. The risers do get scuffed up, but some elbow grease, magic eraser or worst case a little bit of paint is all that is needed. I hate vaccuming stairs.

If you have or are planning on having kids, I'd definitely go with the runner for safety purposes, painted risers or not. My 5 year old daughter has a tendency to trip over absolutely nothing, and I'd hate to see her on wood stair treads....
