I would go with a woodstove or fireplace insert and keep the old gas wall heaters as a backup.
But I like old stuff.
When I was a kid, my uncle and aunt had gas heaters like this. I thought they were uber-cool, I could see the fire and all. I was not dumb enough to stick my hand in it, but, whatever.
you can't see fire in these ones, M3 Mitch. They're not original to the house, they're not really cool looking at all. if the inspector had said they were safe and running well, I'd think about keeping them at least for a while, but he gave the main one a thumbs down and so it seems best to upgrade to something else.
What would you do if it was your house? If you were going to buy this house from me a few years down the road, which heat option would impress you the best?
Put a heating system in the house. Banks don't like to hold mortgages on homes with no heat in them. In Texas, go Forced hot air, might as well add air to it at the same time.
nhmaster, that's kinda what we're thinking. We're not just looking to stay warm, but looking to have a "sellable" home later down the line too.
my husband (who has a background in heating installation and stove sales) doesn't like pellet stoves, he thinks the pellets can get too expensive. He liked wood where we were at before, because the wood was really easy to get. But I hated the mess, lol!
I have both in my house and to be honest, though the pellets are more expensive than wood, they are a whole lot easier to deal with. I have forced hot water heat alos though.
Forced natural gas heat for the lowest cost overall and pretty simple. I would alos have them put several gas outlets just in case you you lose electricity for the system to connect a couple of gas Dearborn type.
