I am trying to research a gas cooktop and see these two options and was wondering if there are any opinions as to why one might be preferred over the other?
Have people used either kind to where they can recommend?

the preference is ease of cleaning.
The "gas-on-glass" has sealed burners, yada, yada, yada. Real easy to keep clean.

If the gas-on-glass is so much easier to keep clean, why would anyone go with recessed? I was told that the recessed versions sell a LOT more...

Wow, really?
The gas-on-glass cooktop I was looking at didn't seem to cost more than the recessed version. Maybe I was looking at a really bad one...
I'm trying to remember the brand.

We have a gas on glass type - except its the cooktop to my stove. But its really no different than the type you buy that is just a cooktop. Our stove was a GE Profile (top of the line, about 7 years ago!). Usually I see the gas on glass as a little more high end than the recessed.

As far as keeping it clean -- well, the "glass" part of mine is black. When it is clean it is PRETTY. (I have basically cast iron burners). However, it shows the spatters pretty significantly and I am not the neatest cook. THey have little cleaning kits (ceram-bryte makes one) with a little razor blade for scraping off any burned residue. If I cleaned it more frequently it probably wouldn't be much work, but I tend to only do it every couple of weeks.

I'm sure either style will do a great job of cooking for you!! (I love gas cooktops, can't stand electric!)
