We're about to move into a house that has (to my untrained eye) a rather small area for the washer/dryer. It's going to be sharing a closet with the water heater, and whatever is responsible for the gas. I keep trying to picture a standard size set in there and I just can't. This space is not for a stackable type set. Has anyone else faced this situation? Did you need to look for a smaller than normal size? A front loader? How and where did you search? I'm clueless here. Help!

measure the size space you have to put a washer/dryer in and go shopping on the internet. Also, try and see if a combination washer/dryer is a workable solution. You can get one machine that does both jobs.

You should have at least 5' (60"). Standard units are 30" wide, so for a little breathing room you should have 65".

Also if you can afford to replace the old tank water heater with a smaller wall mounted on demand water heater that would free up some more space.

Consider the smaller "euro" size front loader washer and dryer. These work best when full of clothes, they hold more than you probably think, the clothes come out of the washer dryer than most top loaders, they have a smaller footprint. IMHO the front-loader is gentler to your clothes so they last longer - IMHO, that is, I don't have objective evidence of that.
